Yemen shot down US drone
On May 28, 2024, Yemen's Houthi rebels claimed they shot down a U.S. MQ-9 Reaper drone. The incident reportedly took place in the Marib province, an area controlled by the internationally recognized government of Yemen. The Houthis released footage of the wreckage, showing parts of the drone and a night-vision clip of the missile launch that allegedly brought it down.
The U.S. Department of Defense acknowledged the loss of the drone, confirming that an MQ-9 crashed in Yemen and stating that an investigation is underway. This event marks the latest in a series of confrontations involving the Houthis, who have previously downed several U.S. drones since taking control of northern Yemen in 2014.
The drone's downing coincides with an uptick in Houthi attacks on shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, partly driven by their stance on the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.
